Training will be provided in small groups and one on one sessions to build your skills and abilities through sustained exposure.
Bootcamps Don’t Work
How often have you found yourself at the end of a week long boot camp leaving with little more than a manual, some scribbled notes and a CD?
Bootcamps are quick and dirty. They are taught in a single style (presentation mode) and don’t account for other learning styles. Week long training programs that dump information on you (think New Horizons) and hand you a crisp paper certificate don’t give you the critical thinking skills and hand on experience to help you resolve technology problems. The alternative will build your skills and confidence through real life examples and the opportunity to take action in the moment.

What’s Your Style?
Most technical training is taught through a combination of showing you in Powerpoint (Visual) and talking about the slides (Auditory). Often they ask you to read thick chapters between classes (Reading) but it’s rare that training involves hands on learning (kinestetic). This mono teaching style does not take into account a person’s learning style so they leave the class knowing less because the format didn’t fit. If you want to know your learning style, check out the VARK learning style assessment. It takes less than 2 minutes to complete.
Another barrier is comfort level. Most people don’t like going to a “classroom” with a bunch of strangers. It’s a gamble if the instructor will be good and if you’re actually get something out of class. Meeting in smaller groups or one on one is more comfortable and the sessions are tailored to meet the needs in your particular situation.
More Students Than an iPod Shuffle
How about the number of students in a bootcamp class? It’s not easy to teach a class of 25 adults. I work with ssmall group of 6-8 students or individually so they retain and process what they’re learning.
It’s About Numbers
Another problem with absorbing material is the vast amount if information on any one technical subject . Don’t spend hundreds of hours struggling through books, websites, forums and mistakes. Many of the answers you’re looking for have already been found.
Benefits for Employers
There is a payoff for employers. Their staff person has an ongoing technical resource which can make a sizeable difference between a small issue an a meltdown. The end goal off all training is to empower the technical professional to resolve issues, faster, better and smarter. Techies often neglect their ongoing educational and certification needs.
